stretch

this is just me stretching out over a blues progression;
then i edited which consisted of speeding it up and
changing the pitch and adding a 2nd copy of the guitar
solo track an octave lower... anyway, this is a 'for the
sake of frequent posting' post...

saturday

well i decided to record and post something
real quick, since in a minute i am about to
dive back into piles and piles of work. in
this track i am first playing around over the
progression of the tune 'there is no greater
love,' and then at the end i solo over a loop
and mess around a bit with editing, etc. etc.

school has started up, so i've been
very busy and haven't had much time
to post. so i wanted to post a few
things i've recorded lately.

here is a riff i enjoyed:

here is me messing around with the

a consequence of listening to too

improvisation

i'm a bit worried that the posts are
becoming a bit homogeneous, but lately
all i feel like doing is improvising
on the classical guitar. so i figured
i'd post this at least, since i've been
busy lately and haven't had much time
for posting!

here's one that's a little different;
i basically imposed harmonic structure
on myself (a melodic minor) but not too
much else and then improvised, looped
over improvising, etc. etc.

days of wine and roses

here is a fairly loose interpretation of the
standard 'days of wine and roses,' played on
acoustic guitar. the melody of the song i
wrote recently also sneaks its way in there
at some points...

for the sake of frequent posting

it has been a few days since i posted,
so i wanted to put something up. this
is just me playing around with basically
a "minor ii-V-i-VI," i.e. the chords
start off as: Em7b5 A7alt Dm7 B7alt

then the whole thing just deteriorates

i wrote a song!

this is basically only the second thing
i've ever 'composed' here is the 1st take:

here is me playing with my slide again:
(caveat: i am very bad with ze slide!)

enjoy!

slide

my dear friend nick sent me a guitar slide
in the mail. i've never played with a slide
before, but today i decided to give it a
shot. i used it with the classical acoustic
guitar that i play, which is probably not
how you're supposed to use a slide. but it
was fun! i liked two things about it a lot:
1) it made the guitar more of a continuous
instrument, versus the normal discrete fretted
version of the guitar. 2) it made the guitar
more percussive; since i couldn't really do
much with my left hand, i started strumming
with my right hand, which i almost never do
any more.

i'll give one caveat -- it gets a little
crazy at the end. i decided not to edit it
out though, because i think it's interesting
that all those sounds were just being made
with an acoustic guitar and a slide! i
thought it was lots of fun. thanks nick!

tuesday night

here's one that is potentially not finished -- basically
all i would like to add is a low E drone of some sort...
my plan for tonight was to play around with drum samples;
so i did that and then added some weird guitar stuff and
messed with it... general beauregard marches on!

6 string chords

i started strumming a pattern today,
trying to use as big of chords as
possible, because i think my hand is
maybe strong enough to play big chords
on the acoustic guitar and it's a thing
i would like to be able to do... so, i
found a nice and cheesy chord pattern and
played it; then decided to record it to
throw up a post. then i recorded a track of
guitar solo over it, then did some typical
audio editing and to make it sound weird but
hopefully interesting! so if you haven't
figured out my 'labels' yet, gb stands for
general beauregard which means heavily edited,
gee means guitar and pee means piano. this one
is gb and gee!

trying things out

here is a pretty minimalist effort. i played
some acoustic guitar, sped it up and messed
with it a bit. then i looped a couple of spots,
and added drums to those spots, and gave a
melody of sorts on top of one of those sections.
i was mostly just trying some things out!

"piano ee"

here are 3 tracks of my piano playing sped up to
twice the speed, with corresponding pitch change.
i would say that this would be the appropriate
speed for my piano playing to be listened to, since
i think twice about as slowly when i'm playing piano,
due lack of skill etc. etc. i'm trying to sneak in
another post before july!

here i am playing around with a chord pattern that
i found.

here i am in the cheese spirit playing my 1-6-2-5

here i am playing along with a garage band loop of
one of my favorite chord progressions, the tadd
dameron turnaround.

the general again

here's another from GB -- i did it because
it doesn't take too long (and i don't have
too long to play around because i have work
but not so much work that i can't make a
track here or there since it's all contained
in the computer when you do it this style)
anyway, i liked it enough to throw it up
here!

also an update would be that i have crossed
the 30 minute threshold on 'electric guitar
music' and i think after maybe 1 or 2 more
i would be ready to finish that album. i may
do a few more in the reverse type style i
did with 'stella by starlight' and let those
finish electric guitar music instead of
recording an entire album of the reverse type
sound, as originally planned.

okay, here is the gb track:

too much of my time!

slackin!

sorry -- i have not posted to this blog in 2 weeks.
that's too long i think. anyway, this one is the
first i recorded for an album i decided i want to try
to record. it's going to be a standards album -- simple
enough -- i found an effect on my delay pedal that i
like -- it's just a bit of reverse-reverb sound. anyway
i thought it might be interesting to make a standards
album of solo guitar with that effect-- should be mellow etc.

"not technically"

hi all -- tonight i really felt like making some electronic tracks and
i made this one and enjoyed it so here it is for your listening pleasure --

basically what i did was to walk a bass line in c minor on musical
typing at a slow tempo, then put a slow drum beat over it by musical
typing. i transcribed the bass line and then wrote a chord progression
following the roots with appropriate chord qualities. then i soloed at
the small speed. for a while i followed the chord progression, then i
basically just hung out in c minor pentatonic, to go with just the bass.

then i sped the whole thing up! muahaha

enjoy!

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

two track tuesday!

it's been a while since i've posted so i decided to post both
of the things i made tonight -- they both turned out fun. basically
i'm just trying to get more comfortable with garage band. what
i really need to practice is my musical typing drumming!

well you needn't (monk)

this originally wasn't going to be a track but it turned out fun
enough i thought. i got a cool accidental guitar effect at the beginning
when my headphone cord was hanging on my high e string and making it buzz weird...

for race

this one ought to be (and is!) dedicated race pendleton,
who essentially 'wrote it' for me in that he asked me a
question about playing 2 chords in progression, giving me
the chord voicings etc. and these 2 chords in progression,
in the same voicings, is what i'm playing here,
and i've titled it for race (etude 1) because it's for race
(for reasons already mentioned) but it's also going to be
the 1st of a series (hopefully) where i explore this progression
(with these voicings) a bit more (since i really like it)

thanks race!

more experimenting

this one is kind of fun. i came up with a little chord
pattern that i liked a while ago, so i made a tune out
of it by doing an AABA format (writing a little bridge
for the B part and using the original pattern for the A).
i 'played' (i.e. 'musically typed') on garage band a
bass-line that would fit over the progression, and then
'played' (musically typed) drums over that. then i recorded
myself comping (playing chords) over the whole thing. then
i played the garage band output and recorded what my speakers
were putting out into audacity (because garage band outputs in
m4a and i don't have an m4a-->mp3 converter). i did a little
extra thing (a tip of the hat to NARDS for this move) where i
took the original drum beat alone and sped it up 2x and laid it
over the track to give it a little extra something to the drum
beat. then i recorded a guitar solo over the whole thing...
since it was longer than i wanted, i sped the whole thing up a bit
and faded everything out. and here's the output! (i may or may not
put this track in this format on an album -- i.e. i may just go
ahead and throw it on there, or i may do further editing and/or
record a new soloing, or i may just pitch the whole thing.)

enjoy!

happy new year!

hi all. well over the break i finished and 'released'
'acoustic guitar music' which is available for free
download here: acoustic guitar music

anyway, please give it a download (you have to download
one by one which is annoying, so if you actually want
the album but that format of downloading bugs you just
email me or post a comment here and i will send you a
.zip file through sendspace or something) and/or a listen!
hopefully i'll be posting a lot this semester since
i have scheduled myself plenty of music time!

here is my first attempt of the new year; mostly this
is just an experiment trying to use new formats to make
tracks, so the structure is pretty basic. i called it
summer during winter because the weather in austin is
really really great right now! ok here it goes:
